Exfoliating acids help loosen the dull, dead cells that sit on the surface of your skin. Used well, they leave skin smoother, brighter and better at absorbing the products that follow.

AHAs such as glycolic and lactic acid work on the surface and suit dullness and uneven texture. BHAs like salicylic acid are oil-soluble, so they reach into pores and suit oily or blemish-prone skin.

PHAs are the gentlest of the three. Their larger molecules work slowly, which makes them a comfortable starting point for sensitive or reactive skin.

Begin with two or three evenings a week and watch how your skin responds. Mild tingling can be normal, but lasting redness or stinging is a sign to slow down.

Acids make skin more sensitive to the sun, so daily sunscreen is not optional while you use them.
