Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin. It keeps moisture in and irritants out, and when it is healthy, skin looks calm, even and comfortable.
Over-cleansing, harsh scrubs and too many active ingredients at once can weaken it. The result is often tightness, flaking, stinging or breakouts that seem to come from nowhere.
Supporting the barrier is mostly about doing less. Choose a mild cleanser, pause strong actives for a while and look for ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, panthenol and centella.

Most barriers recover within two to four weeks of gentle care. Once your skin feels comfortable again, reintroduce active ingredients one at a time.
A healthy barrier makes every other product in your routine work better. Think of it as the foundation, not an extra step.
